Make a real difference leading the dispatchers who save lives of people in crisis. Wythe County seeks applications from professionals qualified to serve as director of emergency communications, overseeing the E-911 Center’s service to the public and first responders. Located at the crossroads of Interstates 77 and 81, Wythe County has over 100,000 visitors pass through daily, creating higher demand for emergency services.

The director must be an effective communicator, good listener and decisive leader, fostering partnerships between dispatchers and first responders to effectively, safely serve the public.

The preferred candidate will have served in senior management of a PSAP with extensive experience as a dispatch, trainer, shift supervisor or manager, holding all certifications and qualifications necessary to oversee and direct the operations of a complex public safety operation.

The candidate should demonstrate a strong history of a) employee recruitment, training and retention, b) effective operational planning, c) implementation of performance measurement to guide employee training and development, d) employee stress recognition and management and e) public budgeting and financial management.

This responsible professional oversees a staff of 20 employees including a deputy director, shift supervisors and dispatchers in a demanding environment. The center has implemented telecommunicator CPR, Emergency Medical Dispatch and new Telex consoles and UHF radios, with Next Generation 911 coming in 2024.

The Wythe County Parks and Recreation is now accepting employment applications for Lifeguard positions at Rural Retreat Lake. These are seasonal part-time positions (up to 28 hours/week) starting May through early September. 

All Candidates must possess a positive friendly demeanor, work well with the public, and be willing to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed. Employees should be able to lift 50 lbs or less without assistance and have reliable transportation. 

All lifeguards are required to have current lifeguard certification. Wythe County can provide certification on a first come first serve basis up to 5 certifications. Interested applicants should contact the Parks and Recreation department as soon as possible.
