On Dec. 22, 2011, an upgraded heating system went into full effect at the shelter, allowing each dog to rest at its own temperature.

According to Virginia Code, each dog must have heat maintained at its own, individual comfort level. This is just one of the many reasons Wythe County decided to upgrade how they were heating the four legged friends who pass through its shelter doors.

With the new system, the heating element for each pen is located on the back wall with a thermostat.  The system gives the  Animal Control Officer the ability control the heat in each individual pen.

Billy Bowers, Building and Ground – Solid Waste Supervisor, said this is the best cost and energy efficient system to provide the dogs with an individualized, comfortable environment.

Bowers said this kind of surface heating made the most sense for the Wythe County shelter because of the money it saves heating just isolated locations.

Another addition to come with the heating system is an automatic exhaust fan. Bowers said with a small number of people working at the facility, the exhaust fans being on a timing system is the best choice to bring fresh air into the shelter.

Another upgrade the shelter has already accomplished is an upgrade of all the lights in the shelter, with the exception of the emergency lights. The new lights will assist in lowering energy costs since they use less wattage.

The Animal Control and Buildings & Grounds Departments continue to plan for improvements to provide efficient and safe care for the dogs at the shelter.
