Wythe County Youth League Football and Cheerleading seasons wrap up with local teams performing above and beyond expectations.
Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 was an eventful day for the youth recreation sports of Wythe County. Both the 2011 Cheerleading Competition and the Youth League Super Bowl XVI wrapped up the season with fierce competitions.
With an unexpected turnout packing the stands, area cheerleading squads competed for the first place spot in their competition. Chants, cheers and dance music rang through Fort Chiswell High School Gym as third through sixth graders fought to come out on top of the pyramid.
“The cheerleading competition school spirit was invigorating all the way down to the end,” said Gary Cody, Wythe County Parks, Recreation and Tourism Director. “They were in sync with their dance routines and it was impressive to see such a turnout for the event.”
In the end, the junior varsity and varsity Bland County Bears swept both categories with two first place wins. First runner up in JV was Sheffey Wildcats with Rural Retreat Indians White as second runner up. In varsity, Wytheville Maroons took first runner up and Max Meadows Pioneers went home with second runner up.
Super Bowl XVI welcomed its competing teams at 12:30 p.m., with match ups that yielded no runaways. “The Youth Football Super Bowls were exciting and evenly matched based on the playoff information. The kids that worked to make it here for each championship and it showed on the field,” said Cody.
He added, “Danny Gordon with WYVE announced the games LIVE on the radio and the support our parents and spectators gave our Wythe Co. and Wytheville kids was extraordinary.”
Wytheville Packers were named JV champions after an exciting match up with Sheffey Wildcats with the Packers coming out ahead 12-6.
After the JV game, the varsity hopefuls, Jackson Eagles and Wytheville Bulldogs, took the field. The Eagles conquered the Bulldogs with an end score of 26-8.
“Hats off to our children in the community that put all their final efforts into the Cheer Competition and the two Super Bowls,” added Cody. “Wythe County Parks and Recreation wants to say thank you to all the coaches, players, parents and guardians for a successful football and cheer Season.”
Next up for the Wythe County Parks and Recreation sport leagues will be the opening of the basketball season on Nov. 12. |
