On Oct. 22, 2011, Wythe County hosted a tire disposal day at Kents Lane Recycling Center in Wytheville. The event due 36 local participants and was seen as a success by members of the Board of Supervisors.
The disposal included drop of for passenger vehicle tires 22 inches and smaller as well as tractor, ATV and lawnmower tires. According to the Solid Waste Department, over 1,700 tires were collected with 22 large tractor tires.
In all, residents of Wythe County filled two tractor trailers and an open container by lunch.
Martha Umberger, Vice Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, took part in the disposal, falling in line with other contributors early Saturday morning. She felt the disposal was good not only for cleaning up unused tires but as an event that brought the community together.
“Since it was a beautiful day, people were out talking and then would get back in their trucks and pull up,” said Umberger. “The building and grounds people were there doing an excellent job, as always.”
At the Oct. 25 Board of Supervisors meeting, Cellell Dalton, County Administrator, agreed to the success of the event and suggested the board consider holding another tire disposal day next spring or summer. |
