It’s an annual event that will get anyone on their feet. The 2011 Wythe County and Town of Wytheville Parks and Recreation Cheerleading Competition, held Oct. 29 at the Fort Chiswell High School Gym.
From pompom waterfalls to pyramids, the competition offers at look at what local cheerleading squads have perfected. Competitive rounds include chants, cheers and dance routines. Each squad will have eight minutes to complete the sequence.
Squads are broken into two age rankings: Junior Varsity, grades three and four, and varsity, grades five and six.
Returning champions competing for consecutive wins will be JV winners Rural Retreat Indians Orange and varsity winners Bland County Bears.
JV squads looking to take the title are Bland County Bears, Max Meadows Vikings, Sheffy Wildcats, Rural Retreat Indians White, Wytheville Hokies, Jackson Eagles, Wytheville Steelers and Wytheville Packers.
Varsity squads competing for a win are Wytheville Hokies, Jackson Eagles, Wytheville Maroons, Rural Retreat Indians Orange, Max Meadows Pioneers, Rural Retreat Indians White, Sheffey Wildcats and Wytheville Bulldogs.
Before competitions begin and between JV and varsity competitions, fans and competitors will be treated to performances by Dynasty of Princeton, West Virginia. Dynasty is an all-star cheerleading squad known for it dramatic stunts and skilled execution.
The JV competition will follow Dynasty’s opening performance at 9:30 a.m. Varsity competitions will begin at 10:45. Fans are requested to be supportive and courteous of each team. Because of this request, air horns will not be permitted at the competition.
Following the cheerleading competition will be the 2011 Wythe County and the Town of Wytheville Youth Football League Playoffs at 12:30 p.m.
