Code of Virginia (1950) §58.1-3219.5, as amended, provides for a state-wide exemption of real property taxes for United States Veterans who have been declared by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to have a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability. In order to qualify for exemption from Wythe County real property taxation, the permanently and totally disabled United States Veteran must own real property in Wythe County, either individually or jointly with the veteran’s spouse, and occupy that property as the veteran’s principal place of residence.

The exemption applies only to the dwelling occupied as the principal place of residence, and the underlying land on which the dwelling is located (up to one acre).

Commissioner of the Revenue staff members are available to answer your questions and assist you with the tax exemption application process in person or by calling 276-223-6015 during regular office hours Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm.
