WYTHEVILLE, Va. – The pool at Rural Retreat Lake & Campground will be starting a new schedule for the summer season.

Beginning July 1, the pool will be open seven days a week throughout the month of July. It will be open Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. (Weather Permitting)

Officials said several citizens requested more hours at the facility. Wythe County Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Williams said the request from the public to have more hours prompted officials to open the pool for seven days a week throughout the month of July.

“The pool staff and lifeguards have worked hard to keep our pool clean and clear,” Williams said. “We wouldn’t be able to operate without their dedication.”

In August, the pool will return to regular schedule because the children will return to school.

During the week of July 8 through July 12, 2019, Wythe County inspection crews will be conducting a physical survey of Austinville’s sanitary sewer system. This study will involve the opening and entering of manholes in the streets and sewer easements. An important task of the survey will be the “SMOKE TESTING” of sewer lines to locate breaks and defects in the sewer system. The smoke that you see coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is NON - TOXIC, HARMLESS, HAS NO ODOR, AND CREATES NO FIRE HAZARD. The smoke should not enter your home unless you have defective plumbing or dried up drain traps. In any event, if the harmless smoke can enter through faulty plumbing, the potential exists for dangerous sewer gases to enter your home. Should smoke enter your home, you may contact a member of the smoke testing crew working in the area and he will be pleased to check with you as to where and why the smoke has entered your home. If you have any seldom used drains, please pour water in the drain to fill the trap, which will prevent sewer gases or odors from entering the building.

Homes located along Staff Street have basement drains that are believed to be directly connected to the sanitary sewer. It is unknown whether these drains have traps that prevent smoke from entering the home. We recommend that you pour water into these drains to fill the traps, should they exist, to prevent smoke from entering the structure. It may also be helpful to place something over the drains temporarily that would also limit any smoke that may enter the structure.

Some sewer lines and manholes are located within easements in the yards of the homes. Whenever these lines require investigation, members of the inspection crews will need access to the easements for the sewer lines and manholes. Homeowners do not need to be home and the workers will not need to enter your house.

Photographs are to be made of leaks occurring in the system. We anticipate the inspections and smoke testing will require approximately two to five days to complete. The information gained from this study will be used to improve your sewer services. Should you have any questions, please contact me at the number below. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Donald T Crisp Jr.
